Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. Listening, History, Recent News and every setting work without one. An account saves your history and settings so they survive a lost or replaced iPhone and stay in step between devices.

What leaves my iPhone?

Sound is analysed on your iPhone, and recordings and clips never leave it. Recent News and rare bird alerts send your location rounded to about a kilometre to eBird and iNaturalist. If you sign in, your history and settings are saved to your account. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings > Account and tap Delete Account. It deletes your account and everything saved to it straight away. History on your iPhone is kept; delete the app to remove that too.

I didn’t get a sign-in email

Check your junk or spam folder and wait a minute. The email has a link to open on your iPhone; if it has a code, you can type that in instead. You can also use Sign in with Apple.

Why does Thicket want my location?

To narrow identifications to birds found where you are at this time of year, to record where sessions were, and to find sightings nearby. Without it, Thicket still identifies birds, but more species are possible, so there are more false matches.

Why didn’t a rare bird alert arrive straight away?

Alerts are checked in the background, and iOS decides when that happens, so an alert can come hours after a report. Checks use where you last opened Thicket. Make sure notifications are allowed for Thicket in the iPhone’s Settings app.

My settings didn’t appear on my new iPhone

Sign in with the same account and keep Thicket open for a few seconds while it syncs. Settings changed on the phone you’re using win over changes made elsewhere.

Can I analyse a recording?

Yes. Tap the upload button on the Listen screen, or share an audio file to Thicket from Voice Memos, Files or Mail. Recordings named like 20260912 0848 Petersfield England.wav use that time and place.

How accurate are the identifications?

Confidence is shown as High, Medium or Possible. Scores aren’t calibrated yet, so treat percentages as rough, and replay a clip to check a match before confirming it.

Identification uses BirdNET V2.4, developed by the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology, licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Nearby sightings come from eBird and iNaturalist, whose contributors’ records make that part of the app possible.
